When will I get my Crashtag® ?

We plan to ship your customized Crashtag® to you no later than a week after you order it. Domestic shipping is typically 1-3 days, with international shipping usually three to 14 days.

What are the physical specs for Crashtag?

Crashtag conforms to the classic dogtag shape of 2″x 1 1/8″ (5.08 x 2.86 cm). Crashtag is .05″ thick (1.3 mm), and weighs only six grams, which is research suggests is equivalent to the weight of a single dirty thought.

What is Crashtag made of?

Crashtag is made of aerospace grade Category 5 Al6V4 titanium, an alloy prized for its remarkable strength, high ductility and low weight. If it wasn’t hanging around your neck, the titanium in your Crashtag would probably be doing duty on the International Space Station or keeping a mountain climbing team from plunging into an abyss somewhere in the Andes. Your Crashtag exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and won’t corrode or oxidize under normal use. The titanium in Crashtag is hypo-allergenic and bio-compatible. Lastly, Crashtag itself is not magnetic (however the magnetic breakaway clasp, is, because, well, that’s the whole point of it).

What sort of printed information should go on the Crashtag?

It’s really up to you, but you have 159 characters spread out over nine lines to put anything you want. However, the printed area is a natural for emergency contact and medical information. Due to its shape and location (around the neck), first responders worldwide know that important information can be found on your Crashtag. On our Configurator page you’ll find a list of suggested information.

How long will the marking on Crashtag last?

Your personal information on the backside of your Crashtag is created with a high-power laser that accurately ablates Crashtag’s surface to create a dark and deep matte imprint. Meanwhile, the front of Crashtag is laser marked using a technique we call laser chromaxidography (chro-ma-zide-aw-gra-phy) which employs tuned, industrial lasers to alter the color of the titanium itself in a very specific, precise manner by converting the titanium into titanium oxides, and also introducing microscopic waves onto the surface that diffract light and thus give the tag color and attractive iridescence. Crashtag is unique in that we’ve created a system whereby we can get practically every color in the spectrum through this approach. And as such, laser chromaxidography is not simply a coating above the surface like paint or silkscreen and thus can’t wear off (in case someone challenges us on this point, yes, we admit it we suppose it may be possible to remove the markings off the tag by taking something like a belt sander or angle grinder to it, but under normal use, even extreme use, your Crashtag will be visible and colorful for basically like forever). Lastly, we stand behind the integrity of every component our product. Both Crashtag and its closure are guaranteed for life. Simply return the defective component back to us and we’ll replace it free of charge.

What is a QR Code?

QR Code, short for “Quick Response Code,”is a visual system by which machines can read a coded square and quickly link to a unique URL. It was designed in 1994 by Denso Wave corporation of Japan and was originally intended to assist with inventory management at Toyota. Since then, QR Codes have found many uses … for instance, on Crashtag.

Why did you put a QR Code on the Crashtag? And how does it work?

Today, any modern smartphone has the ability to scan a QR code. The user simply launches a free QR Code reader app (there are literally dozens out there. Just go to your phone’s app store and search ‘QR’ and you’re well away), points it at the QR Code, and then — by a kind of technological magic — a unique web page is summoned to that phone. A detailed explanation of the technology of the QR reader is beyond the scope of our little blurb, but suffice to say that a little poking around on the internet will get you better answers than we could paraphrase here anyway.

… and that’s the Crashtag QR Code. Now here’s a “for instance:”

So say you met someone interesting while you’re out of the house, doing whatever. This person shares some of your interests and you wouldn’t mind becoming friends on Facebook, or show them your Strava riding log, or have this person read your blog, or give that person your email. Well instead of writing down all these URLs, handles, numbers, addresses and whatnot, all that person would need to do is just make a quick scan of your Crashtag, and their QR Code reader application will point their smartphone right to your own personal Crashtag page, where information about you — and here’s the important part — only the information you want to share, resides You are completely in control of the information you put on there. We see it as sort of like a modern version of the old fashioned calling card.

(By the way, scanning the Crashtag’s QR Code is a deliberate act. One can’t scan this QR Code from say across the room for instance. Scanning is done from a few inches away from the tag, and as such involves the the wearer’s knowledge.)

So your Crashtag QR Code links to your own Crashtag page at www.crashtag.me. You place only the information there that you want to share. That way people you meet have an easy way of staying in touch with you: New friends. Nice!

Lastly as a redundant feature, the URL of your unique Crashtag page is also printed on your Crashtag, so your Crashtag page URL can be accessed in a standard manner.

How easy is it to open a bottle with the bottle opener in Crashtag?

Comprehensive and ongoing testing continues to confirm that it’s very easy. However, rumors of bottles opening in the mere proximity of Crashtag however cannot at this time be confirmed. Plus, as it’s around your neck your Crashtag is always ready to open a bottle with just a quick tug.

How does the Crashtag stay secure around my neck? Could it choke me?

Crashtag comes with a 26.5″ (67.3 cm) strong nylon microcord in your choice of ten colors. Each end is secured to a small magnetic clasp made of hematite. Putting Crashtag on and taking it off is easy and with a reasonable tug, the clasp detaches. Our magnetic clasp is set to detach about 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs). But if you want to go old school and use the classic military style ball chain, we’ve got that as an option, too. Our ball chain is rated to come apart at 9kg. (20 lbs).

Crashtag silencers are also available when the ball chain option is selected. Alternatively, you could put your Crashtag somewhere else, like on your keychain, shoelaces, wrist, ankle, in your wallet, with your phone.

Finally, Crashtag can be ordered with a 6″ cable and barrel closure, which makes it super easy to put on your hydration backpack, fanny pack, hiking boots, running shoes, fanny pack, luggage, stuff like that.
